(It’s sort-of on the way to Edgbaston from Hampshire) we’ll talk about the cricket again but for now I’m going to use the post “The Future is Here” to add any thoughts about Strauss etc.

I’m rather worried that the ECB’s reach is long – I went to buy the papers this morning (“Read all about it”) but they had not been delivered – already two+ hours late. A good day to bury bad news?

Surrey have five men who this season have played nine or more matches and average 40+ – in some cases considerably more than 40. We have one, Brown on 42 followed by Gubbins of 37.

Surrey’s leading spinner (Jacks) has 17 wickets at 47 each and they have no bowler who has taken 40 wickets yet this year. Our leading spinner, Dawson, has 24 wickets at 28 apiece, while Abbott & Barker have 50+ wickets and Abbas 49.

Liam’s 24 wickets makes this his second best Championship season in terms of wickets taken bettered only by his 31 wickets in 2017. Fairly low returns for someone who has played Test cricket as a spinner even if his four appearances were somewhat surprising.

Liam’s figures this year, greatly boosted by that Chelmsford pitch of course and he’s a fine cricketer in all formats but it seems to me that no one (including Liam) has ever quite decided his best roles and positions. He’s one of the best ‘slippers’ we’ve ever had but not long ago spent a couple of years in the outfield, he’s been a successful opening bat and a number six and I guess the thing about his red-ball bowling is that he’s always first choice because he can bat. If he and Crane had been comparable with the bat and in the field six years ago, who knows? Mind you he was easily the best and unluckiest of a bad bunch for England last night.

First signings for next year announced – I bet they look good on a cricket pitch …

It took a while for me to get it, but I like what you’ve done there Dave!
