Thanks to John for spotting this

“Hampshire Cricket are delighted to announce Craig White has been appointed First Team Coach. White, who had previously held the position of Assistant Coach and Bowling Specialist after joining the Hampshire coaching staff in 2012, took on the head coaching responsibilities in July this year following the departure of Dale Benkenstein.

Craig White said: “I’m proud and honoured to be offered the role as First Team Coach. I want to create a relaxed and focused environment where the players are in the best frame of mind possible to apply themselves on the field and perform moving forward and  I’ll be doing my very best to ensure that the club, its players and supporters enjoy success in the coming years.”

He’s certainly a good guy and as far as I’m aware the finest guitarist ever to hold this role at Hampshire.

Worryingly in the BBC report (http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/cricket/37875028) he also says “It was something I didn’t think I was quite ready for. Maybe another two or three years learning the trade might have been the right time.”

Not terribly encouraging is it?

Comment by James

Not encouraging at all, I am inclined to agree with John Cottrell about White being the cheapest candidate. I would have preferred an external candidate as I feel the environment needs some new ideas and influences.

It’s an odd thing to say (not ready?) but at least it’s honest. Over the past 65 years we’ve had a lot of ex-Hants players as senior coaches: Holt, Harrison, Keith, Sainsbury, Tremlett, Marshall, Terry, White, but very few outsiders (Cook & Benkenstein). Craig is an internal appointment and maybe there is no money but he’s not an ex-player, and Aussie/Yorkshire is an interesting combination.

or……..

Maybe give the guy a chance…….not sure Jason Gillespie was the finished article when he started & we all know how that turned out.

I, for one, wish him well & certainly won’t be leaping to judge him before the inks even dry

Dave, who are all the Hampshire coaches now? First and second teams. Craig White’s guitar mastery aside, surely he is not expected to be entirely brilliant at everything. To …polish JV’s batting tecgnique, to mature Crane’s fizzers, to encourage McManus at the stumps.
Perhaps he is?

& more breaking news……look who says he’s coming back 😊

Is he now the overseas player or still Kolpak or whatever? If overseas is that why Ryan left? As for coaches (thanks James) nobody nominated as a bowling coach – maybe Giles for the leggies and Tony for SLA?

Comment by pompeypop

Bowling coach….what about James Tomlinson…

Comment by John Cottrell

Fidel’s signing is now showing on the BBC Cricket website…no item on our website as yet..and no mention as to his status (Overseas or Kolpak).

Comment by John Cottrell

To be fair John our wonderful official website is normally a bit behind the times. They should be announcing our signing of the promising youngster Barry Richards any day now!

Comment by James

To be fair to Hampshire on this occasion Fidel made the announcement himself before it was officially announced by the club.

Comment by Ian

Maybe the club didn’t know they had signed a contract with him?

Comment by James

There were strong indications of ‘Tommo’ as bowling/2nd XI coach at the end of last season but nothing official yet I think. I hope so – lovely bloke and very clear, intelligent thinker about the game

Comment by pompeypop

I heard Tommo was being lined up as our new batting coach!

Comment by James

Really …..!!!! He was quite ok as nightwatchman.
Hopefully someone has got their bats and balls mixed up…

Comment by John Cottrell

Well if Trump can be President of the United States anything is possible John!
