My latest email from the Bowl suggests that fixtures are imminent, and we’re all anticipating clashes between the 16.4 NCC matches and the Championship
As I understand it there might also be a clash with a Test or two, in which case England players are released to play in those (?)
So maybe the same could apply to the Championship? Instead of counties having to field half the 2nd XI, the 16.4 NCC Franchises could fly in temporary, expensive overseas replacements while Vince, Dawson, Crane and Abbott play for Hampshire (etc).
BBC: Hampshire’s first team assistant coach Alfonso Thomas has signed a new two-year contract with the county. The former Somerset seamer took up the position in January and Hampshire finished third Division One of the County Championship in 2019 – their highest position since 2008.
“Alfonso has had a positive impact on the playing group,” said Hampshire director of cricket Giles While. “It’s great to have someone with his knowledge guiding our bowlers.”
(BBC) Kevin Shine, 50, has joined Nottinghamshire as an assistant coach after 14 years as lead fast bowling coach for the England and Wales Cricket board.
If there is a Football website that is the equivalent of Cricket Archive where I could, for example, find all the matches played by Arthur Holt or Mike Barnard (below)?
I’m compiling monthly ‘Day-by-Day’ entries for the Hampshire website. Through the winter that’s not always simple (nothing currently for 28 December) and I’m trying to avoid copying Alan Edwards’ On This Day publication. Sometimes, cricketing footballers can help (Ted Drake particularly useful) but I’d like to find more information about the others who did not play internationals.

But the news is out and I wish him well – we didn’t really have an off-spinner last time we won the Championship (BAR?) and the time before that, Mervyn Burden got us off to a good start but lost his place to Alan Wassell (slow-left-arm). So here’s hoping for a bit of history:
(BBC) Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon will join Hampshire as an overseas player for the 2020 season. The 31-year-old will play on a red-ball only contract in the County Championship and should be available for April’s early-season fixtures. “We’re absolutely delighted with his signature and can’t wait to have him on board,” Hampshire director of cricket Giles White told BBC Radio Solent.

Twenty years ago today Malcolm Marshall died in Barbados. Through the 1980s, whenever he played with Hampshire they finished in the top six, but in the years he was on tour they were last, 15th and 15th (of 17). He was a member of the sides that won the Sunday League in 1986 and the B& H Cup in 1992 and he, Shackleton, Roberts and Abbott are our only regular bowlers with first-class averages below 20.
I’ve got the rugby on. A couple of thoughts. The game started 40 minutes ago but the clock shows 28 minutes played. Will it finish in time for my lunch? (some people say cricket’s slow).
The reason of course is injuries and each time someone was hurt they brought on a substitute. It’s quite a neat idea isn’t it? Do you remember Jimmy Anderson being unable to play 14 of the 15 sessions in that Test Match? A substitute would have been handy but we know that cricket doesn’t like to mess with its traditions.
