Well not today of course, although the lunch score is very satisfactory but they were in 1974, by an innings. Now we know that ultimately the 1974 season took a terrible wet turn but the traditional Pompey week that year saw the best side in the country win both Championship matches against Warwickshire and Worcestershire by an innings. And now you can read all about it again. Here’s an up-to-date extract from the Hampshire Cricket Heritage website about the latest HCH Booklet which is the sixth in our series since 2020. The author is John Winter and he writes:

Last summer, I was privileged to sit down with former players Bob Stephenson, Bob Herman, Trevor Jesty and Mike Taylor to talk about my first ever week watching Hampshire back in August 1974 as an eleven-year old. Arguably, they are the greatest team to have played for the club in the County Championship going right back to 1895. They were the current champions, of course, and that week they beat two of their closest rivals by an innings in each game to stretch their lead at the top of the 1974 table. The booklet – with a limited numbered edition of 200 – will be on sale in the Club Shop from Sunday June 30th onwards. You can read more on the site at:

(NB Unlike previous booklets, I am not currently selling them online)

Mo Abbas has played six innings this season scoring just eight runs BUT he has never been dismissed. Why do his partners always assume he can’t bat when maybe nobody really knows (remember that stand with Vince?). Barker played well but on the assumption Abbas can’t bat missed a bonus point by two runs.

Ref that last batting point and more on Mo. In his six innings this year ALL not out the highest partnership was 8 and in total that last wicket has brought 21 runs in 6 innings – each time his partner has given his wicket away. They should bat him at 8 since that might make them take the 10th wicket seriously.

By contrast our opponents last wicket partnerships this year have produced 169 runs in 8 innings at 21.3 each  an advantage of 18 runs in every innings.

Followed the Live Stream on our website this morning then went for a bike ride to enjoy the sun and the seafront. Got back home and the Live Stream was replaced by two stories about the Hundred.

Speaks Volumes!!

Dom Kelly for England U-19s v a Young Lions Invitation XI 6-0-52-1. Eddie Jack is in the 13 but didn’t bowl

Comment by Dave Allen

Jack was run out for 0 playing for second XI vs Surrey at new Malden. Ashman top scorer so far with 85, 242/7

See Eddie Jack and John Turner selected for a Counties XI v West Indies at Beckenham on 3rd to 5th July.

A rather stupid run out (Jack) if you watch it on nvplay.

My headline is beginning to look prophetic (I hope)

My only concern is that we haven’t declared yet

Sixth wicket record v Warwicks beating Jack Newman and Phil Mead.

Liam frequently gets his name on the Honours Board these days but for James that’s his fourth consecutive away century – over two years since last one at the Bowl.
