As an amateur and naval officer, he played only occasionally for Hampshire but is the first of the six men to have scored a century on first-class debut for the county (none on first-class debut). He was also a Scottish Rugby International.

He died at the Battle of Jutland in 1916 and I’m very grateful to Richard Griffiths who received and passed on these two photographs from a memorial at Murrayfield

I see Eric Liddell is also on that memorial. Good company to be keeping.

Dave-I’ve seen his name on the War Memorial on Plymouth Hoe and I assume he must be on the one at Southsea.
