Is there a joke about a Creek here? (By the way, I’ve just spotted a 19th century Middlesex player called Arthur Daly)

Dawson, Gilbert Wilkinson (309) born Bradford 9.12.1916, died Glasgow 24.5.1969. When Desmond Eagar arrived as captain and secretary after the war, he set about recruiting players to replace members of his ageing side who had last played in 1939. He looked north for some, where the great success was Derek Shackleton, but he also found two Yorkshiremen, both called Dawson but not related. Of the two, Gilbert was the more successful, coming into the side age 30 in 1947. He was fairly regular for three seasons, playing 60 first-class matches but then left the club. His final recorded cricket match came in mid-September 1949 in a one day, single innings match at Bournemouth for Hampshire against a side led by the Duke of Edinburgh.

His first season brought mostly modest rewards with one half century and 254 runs in his first 11 games, until in the last match of the season at Bournemouth, he opened the batting and scored 124 against his native county. This seemed to give him confidence so there was another century v Derbyshire at Portsmouth in 1948, and 1229 runs at 23.63. There were two not out centuries in 1949, 106* v Sussex at Hove and his best of 158* v Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge, and four half centuries as he passed 1,000 runs again and improved his average to 33.29. For some reason, however, approaching his 33rd birthday, that was the end of his county career. He died in tragic circumstances age just 52, found in his car after a crash apparently involving no other vehicle.

Dawson, Harold (308) born Todmorden, Yorkshire 10.8.1914, died Todmorden 14. 5.1994. Dawson, a right-hand batsman, played for his home town Lancashire League club regularly from 1932-1964 – a long spell interrupted only intermittently in the war, and during his years in southern England with Hampshire, and briefly in Devon. He played in 10 matches for Hampshire in 1947 & 1948 but with little success, scoring 236 runs at 13.11 with a best of 37 v Cambridge University and two other scores in the thirties in Championship matches.

Dawson, Liam Andrew (490) born Swindon 1.3.1990. He has played first-class and List A matches since 2007 and T20 since 2008 as well as representing England in all three formats since 2016. (To be completed as with all current players, prior to publication)

Cricket Archive also lists WM Dawson who played for the Gentlemen of Hampshire in 1881, but not in first-class cricket for the county

Gilbert Dawson died 24.5.2969.
He might live long enough to see England win in Australia.
