A record in an innings and a match v Hampshire

What about wicketkeeping records against Hampshire?

Comment by vern1970

He wasn’t keeping wicket (Smith) but it’s seven in an innings (Ronchi) and 10 in a match (Wilson plus)

It will be interesting to hear Birrell and Vince’s comments on losing two of our hard-earned three bonus points through our poor over rate. Although the bigger picture is of the gulf between Surrey and Hampshire at the Oval, and of what could be a season of struggle, several teams in recent years have found their status determined by over-rate deductions. I wonder how seriously this is taken?

Great… I can see trouble ahead. No excuse for losing points on a poor over rate. They are hard enough to come by as it is. – Bill Seager

Kent are playing at Old Trafford on Friday. If those two sides were to draw that match (their game in hand), Hampshire will be bottom of the table by this time next week (assuming nothing utterly bizarre happens in the next couple of hours).

Yesterday Adi Birrell was saying it is difficult to improve the over rate when the opposition are scoring so quickly. The question he needs to ask himself is why we got so far behind when the opposition weren’t scoring quickly.

As for concentrating on gaining batting points this season aren’t we missing an important component? Batsmen.

Today Adi said we always struggle at the Oval but we will be back there next season trying to do better. I hope we are.

Interesting – I hope so too, but …

Earlier today ‘Nye’ Donald scored 97 for Derbyshire, currently Tom Scriven (49*) and Scott Currie (44*) have added 87* for the ninth wicket for Leics.

With all the Div One results in today and Kent playing Lancs on Friday we will be in the bottom two after four matches this time next week whatever happens at Old Trafford. If they draw we’ll be bottom.

In Hampshire’s two innings at the Oval only one of their batters managed a Strike Rate of 50 in both knocks:

Mo Abbas!

Comment by Dave Allen

For me Neser has to play from now on, Abbott or Abass should be dropped.

Comment by vern1970

It would certainly boost the batting.

Comment by Dave Allen

According to the BBC he’s only available for one CC game.

Comment by Tom Johnson

I think Neser could play more games if Abbott or Abbas were to be dropped.

With next weekend being a bank holiday weekend, how come across the two divisions, only 10 of the 18 counties have a fixture. Do teams really need a rest this early in the season and also once the fixture list gets out of kilter, playing or not playing can potentially make a big difference weather wise this time of year. Crazy!

If you were inclined to have a conspiratorial frame of mind and you noted the recent identification of eight major cricket centres and you thought the ECB is quite keen to reduce the number of first-class counties and the number of Championship matches you might (just might) be inclined to suspect that the Championship fixture list in the first few weeks of 2024 is – along with the ‘perfect’ weather – contributing hugely to the case.

Of course if like me you are the eternal optimist you’d simply say it’s all jolly bad luck.
