Better then ’61

In our first title-winning year (1961) we won a fine but rather odd victory at the Oval when because of an experimental Law there was no follow-on and we chased down a victory target after being bowled out cheaply in the first innings. Roy Marshall led that charge and with Henry Horton added 180 for the second wicket which was until today our record partnership for that wicket against Surrey. Now it’s not – the record now reads:

201 T Albert & N Gubbins The Utilita Bowl 2024

It’s clearly an omen.

PS An odd last over. Brown and Dawson added 157 at about six an over but after Ben took a single moving on to 99*, Liam could not get him back on strike and the live picture feed (I was home by then) couldn’t keep up either. So, we resume tomorrow with Brown needing one more run and the pair needing to add 11 more runs to take them past our current 5th wicket record v Surrey (167).

PPS It’s the end of May – Ali Orr is 23; Toby Albert is 22; Fletcha Middleton is 22 & Tom Prest is 21. All four (uncapped) have scored Championship centuries this season. It’s the first time four different uncapped Hampshire batters aged 23 or less have scored Championship hundreds by the end of May.

(Have I checked? No. Here’s your chance to prove me wrong!)

I have been reporting the rate at which wickets fall in each Championship match. The two-day game which finished at Durham today saw a wicket fall every 4.91 overs. That is the lowest figure anywhere this year.

As you were busy I wondered if you would have had the chance to see Toby Albert get over the line…….I know the live feed gives you one angle but this angle was a heart in the mouth moment for me (I think my dad was even more nervous judging by his comments)

Today was another truly lovely day

That’s lovely Jo, thank you. I was quite busy but having a good day and I did get out to see that lovely moment although not side-on so never sure. I was shouting “go on”, “go on” and he made it. Terrific.

Wow!

If Ben scores one more run tomorrow he’ll be our third centurion, equalling 13 other occasions (two v Surrey). If Liam reaches three figures then four in an innings will be a first-ever for Hampshire.
